Puglia 2013… the experience continues…

Greetings from Italia! The past couple of days the group has experienced some of the amazing foods, wine and culture of Puglia. Trips included a visit to the stunning beauty of Lecce, often referred to as the "Florence of the South". A Baroque-era inspired city, it is also the location of the only Roman amphitheater in Puglia. Since it was Mother's Day, the city was very quiet which helped make the experience very memorable, with the peace and tranquility that typically one doesn't find in larger Italian cities. Prior to Lecce we were treated to a vineyard tour, winery tour, wine tasting lunch...

Puglia 2013 Wine Tour… the town of Matera

Greetings Everyone! Today we visited the ancient town of Matera, which was built on the side of a ravine called 'The Gravina' which was created by a river now reduced to a small stream. Many of the famous 'Sassi' dwellings are really only caves dug into the hillside made of the calcareous rock that characterizes much of the landscape of Basilicata and Puglia. As the town expanded, new streets were often constructed on the rooftops of other houses and it is this 'layering' of the 'Sassi' houses that has created the extraordinary images for which Matera has become famous.  Unesco called Matera...

Puglia 2013

Greetings from Puglia! It's been an excellent tour in this wonderful part of Italy, home to big, rich Primitivo red wine and subtle, aromatic whites.  This is the 'bread basket' of Italy, grain too, and 50% of the olive oil production comes from Puglia.  This region is divided into 5 provinces; we're staying in the Brindisi sub-region, in the town of San Vito at a property that is several hundred years old, in the country surrounded by 1,000 year old olive trees (some of the 0ldest in all of Italy), farms, rolling hills and stunning beauty.  Brindisi is rich in traditions, customs, folk feasts...
